Daily Fixation: Etro Tassel Scarf

Etro Tassel Scarf - $350

Image thanks to MR PORTER

I can’t quite put my finger on what I love about this scarf. Maybe it’s the blinding bright colors that shouldn’t work, but for some reason, do. Maybe it’s the intriguing material, or the playful multicolored tassels dangling at the hem. Whatever it is, I’m smitten, and I hope you are too. I would wear it under a blazer of linen or oxford cotton for an eye catching look on an otherwise sleepy summer sunset.

Tip of the Day: Live Life on the Top Side

Top Siders by Band of Outsiders for Sperry Top-Sider

Image thanks to hypebeast

As of an eventful few years ago, the fashion community seems to be in a frenzy. Designers are coming out with them, everyone’s wearing them, and they’re the toast of upbeat menswear magazine features. Friends, welcome to what I like to call the top sider movement, led by our ever-faithful leader, Sperry Top Sider. Top Siders are successful because they’ve got the trifecta, they’re classic and yet eccentric, they’re begging to be splashed upon by every color on the color wheel, and they’re reminiscent of the decade that’s been inspiring nearly every collection at Milan in fall. They’re the textbook definition of an it shoe., and because they go with literally everything in your closet, and they don a suspiciously meager price tag, there is no excuse to refrain from the bandwagon.

Daily Fixation: 3.1 Phillip Lim Gradient Riding Pants

Pants by 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2012

I’ve succumbed to obsession ever since I laid eyes on these, scouring every mens boutique in all of the fashion shoposphere. The ombre has been done tastefully; taking no risks in fabric, fit, or color, the only variable in this equation is the color shift in the grayscale gradient, and I think that’s what separates this fashionable pair from the others I’ve seen strutting down the catwalk. The adoration carries on.

Fashion Week

Yesterday marked the start of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and two days from now will mark the first showing of menswear. Below are some of my favorite looks from spring, gaze with intensity, my friends.

Tip of the Day: Go For the Right Stripes

Sailor Tee Shirt by Saint James - $70

The modern day cosmopolite dons the mouth of a sailor. I say, they may as well have the stripes to match. Summer is fast approaching, a period that has been well represented in fashion by nautical inspired designs for decades, even centuries; And as idealistic design gets exponentially more daring with each summer collection, it pays to have pieces that can anchor(pun intended) your look.

Comme des Garcons Fluorescent Neon Leather Wallet - $420

I carry a money clip around, simply because my trousers are cut too slim to carry a wallet, but for the gent who enjoys a fine supple leather specimen, and isn’t afraid of a little color, I can’t imagine that this is a bad direction to take. It sports a functional and portable silhouette, and packs a punch of personality. While the alternating neon fascia makes a big impression, the true beauty is in the little details. The beautiful accent stitching adds an artisanal element to the piece, the golden zipper adds a personalized touch, as most zip wallets are lined with silver, the protectively encased leather lining indicates quality and care, and last, but certainly not least, the pull is accessorized with an electric blue ribbon adorned with a minuscule golden ring. The wallet is simply perfection, you’ll smile every time you have to reach for it.

Pierre Hardy Contrast Trim Chukka - $460

As I was browsing the Barneys New York online shop, I came across these. A theoretical contradiction, the pair boast the traditional structure of a chukka, but scrap the typical color families and materials a chukka is fashioned out of for a look that is, altogether, a refreshing surprise. These are sporting a crisp, summer white hue, splashed over a beachy canvas background, and a dash of capri blue to top it all off, all resting on top of an ivory sole. Pierre Hardy managed to take the template for a basic shoe, and create one that’s anything but…

Tip of the Day: Best Places to Shop for High Street Menswear

While there will always be the fabulous few that are blessed with the means to buy out Dolce & Gabbana for spring, collect the custom tailoring of Boateng and Amies, and the footwear creations of Lobb and Berluti, the rest of us, at least for now, need to find a more economic source to fill our closets. The following are the best places to shop for leopard shirts, kelly green chinos, and brogued bluchers that won’t break the bank.

1. Topman

Topman is source to the more adventurous items in your closet. With lilac blazers, mustard denim, and striped espadrilles, all under $200, how could you resist?

2. ASOS

Carrying all sorts of staples, expensive and inexpensive alike, this place is your go to. If you have a whole in your closet that a pair of raw skinnies could fill, there are literally hundreds of options to choose from, plus a pink pair that you never thought you would have liked. This place is supplied by indie and of-the-now labels like G-Star, Superdry, Monkee Genes, and Vivienne Westwood, but one of the best labels they house is their very own.

3. American Apparel

The do gooding vertically integrated manufacturer is chalk full of basic pieces and their more daring counterparts, all with a price tag that will make your billfold jump for joy. known for the innovative things they have done with the t-shirt, this is the place to go for closet staples with a twist, like 5 inch shorts and double breasted cardigans.
4. J.Crew
Highly regarded by fahion’s finest, J.Crew puts great care into every single article of clothing that they market. Whether it’s a cashmere cardigan from an italian mill, slim fit selvedge denim, or a tie that was handmade in New York, you know that it will last forever.

Tom Ford Spring 2012 Dinner Jackets - $do you even want to know?

The designer who is known for unequivocal seventies chic and outrageous ad campaigns is at it again with these illustrious pieces of formalwear. With a sheen set to stun and the hue to match, this is the perfect thing to don at some swank summer gathering in some fabulously remote location adorned with sunsets and mojitos. If you aren’t accompanied with an invitation to such an event, it will look good pretty much anywhere else, too…

Tip of the Day: Try a Monochromatic Approach

Look by Dolce & Gabbana

While browsing the spring catalogues, I noticed a variety of trends that really spoke to my style aesthetic. I was scrolling down Dolce & Gabbana’s online display of menswear, and I was captivated by the tasteful monochromes that bestowed themselves to me. I find it incredible, what the design team could do with such a limited color palette. They employed bright hues, like the plum pictured above, and played with large varieties of textures and materials, and utilized slight variations in shade and brightness to achieve a sort of eye catching omniscience that couldn’t be achieved by using opposite ends of the color wheel. In most cases, I would deem it unoriginal to wear an entire look from one single collection or even go off of the same general idea that a designer had in mind, but in this case, it seems like it would be an insult to the clothes, to diverge from what they were intended to be worn with; it would be like separating siblings, just cruel. I love the concept of the monochrome, because when you limit the color scheme in your ensemble to a single swatch of color, you have to find contrast elsewhere, allowing your innovative side to shine.

Dior Homme Silk Taffeta Sport Jacket - $2195 at Luisa Viaroma

Somewhere between varsity and motorcycle jacket, on the corner of teal and taffeta, you find this fantastic thing. The type of jacket that, glancing at the surface, is interpreted as a miss, an article of ready to wear that is ready only for the tall, dark, and outrageous to wear, but once dissected and contemplated, its potential manifested invaluable. You could keep it zipped, throw it on with teal skinnies and go for a monochromatic baseball player look, or you could open it up and show off the nonchalant scarf and loose tie that are hiding underneath. No matter how you wear a jacket like this, expect a sporty undertone. It shines in casual predicaments, but for a formal occasion, switch it up for a dinner jacket. You don’t want to be the guy wearing one of these to a smart casual event, people will take you for that off beat dude in the corner that coined the term, “How ‘bout those Yankees?”. When you step out in a jacket like this, you look like you’re worth your rocks, and the teal taffeta just ups the ante. Take the leap, click the “add to cart” button, just don’t be surprised if you have the sudden urge to buy a bad mother****** wallet.

Tip of the Day: Button it Up

Looks from the Spring Collections of Louis Vuitton, Band of Outsiders, Simon Spurr, and Michael Bastian

Noone ever feels compelled to approach and tell you, “Wow, I love your tee and sweatpants combo today”. Only the brave few roll out of bed 45 minutes early to delve into the depths of their sartorial being, hand selecting an array of clothing articles and accessories in complementary color families, and venture into the daily process of voir dire, narrowing an entire wardrobe down to one well thought over ensemble. People are drawn to the sauntering separates, the savile suits, the cool colors, just as they are drawn to athletes in training, musicians in practice, dancers in rehearsal, and others that clearly put an effort into their craft. It’s an art, a continuous process, the careful curation of a symbiotic wardrobe, the pairing of articles of clothing that create contrast and depth, and the contemplative editing of one’s closet, like any other time consuming passion, it’s an art. It may take all of one’s strength to invest considerable time and attention into their wardrobe, but what you get in turn is well worth the price you pay. Not everyone is passionate about what they throw on their back, and that’s ok, you don’t have to go all out, a collared shirt, slim fitting trousers, even a simplistic tee shirt can go a very long way in today’s day in age. Stepping out the door, looking like you give two cents about your personal appearance, can mean the world to your self esteem and to the moods of those around you. Make an effort and you will make someone’s day. It might even be yours.

Tip of the Day: Go Floral

Look from Duckie Brown Spring/Summer 2012

Never, have I seen this much floral inspired menswear for spring. Reflected in the collections of Duckie Brown, Dolce & Gabbana, and others, we’re seeing floral from A-Z, and with the leaps in menswear innovations each season, it couldn’t be more timely. Whether it’s a tailored shirt to layer under a riding jacket, or a pair of euro shorts to give an edge to your usual summer look. A few years ago, the only floral available to men was the hawaiian shirt, which contains more tack than a tick tack container. Today, men can really experiment with what they throw on their back without being considered overly flamboyant. Go floral, let freedom reign.

Dsquared2 leather painted edge shoe - $454 at Luisa Viaroma

The distinguished design aesthetic of the designers at Dsquared2 came out with their take on top siders this spring, and for me at least, it’s been love at first sight. The boat shoe, much like the printed tie, can be controversial, because if not done correctly, it can be a catastrophe. Color is the top sider’s best friend, because it lifts the shoe out of it’s grumpy old man demographic. When you see a boat shoe in a navy, a yellow, a red, Elmer Fudd is the last thing that comes to mind. I think that when a design team can take a piece that is cursed with a stench that noone wants to be around, and bring it back to life, they deserve to be commended for it. This is my favorite shoe for this season.
